A forest day: hiking Cabo Blanco from Santa Teresa

A forest hike with the ocean waiting beyond the trees. Start from Cabuya, choose the Danés loop or the longer Sueco beach trail, and leave room for an unhurried day.

Which Cabo Blanco hike should you choose from Santa Teresa?

Enter through the Cabuya visitor station. Choose the Danés forest loop for a shorter outing or the longer Sueco trail toward Cabo Blanco beach. The published visiting schedule is Wednesday–Sunday, 8 a.m.–4 p.m.; confirm current access and the trail-entry cutoff with the reserve before travelling. Start early and bring water and walking shoes.

A forest day at the peninsula’s southern tip

We recommend Cabo Blanco when your group wants a proper hiking day away from the surf beaches. The forest is the attraction: take time to notice birds overhead, shifting light beneath the canopy and the change of scenery as you walk. Wildlife sightings are a possibility, never a promise.

There is a conservation story here too. In 1963, Olof Wessberg and Karen Mogensen helped protect this landscape as the peninsula was losing forest. Walking through the regrown canopy gives that history a tangible setting.

Start at the Cabuya visitor entrance

Arrange transport from Villa Raya to the visitor station in Cabuya. The edge of the reserve closest to Santa Teresa is not the visitor entrance. Ask your driver about the route and road conditions for the day, and agree the return pickup before you set out.

SINAC’s published schedule is Wednesday to Sunday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Check opening arrangements, admission and the latest time to start your chosen trail with the reserve office at +506 2642 0093. Trail-entry cutoffs can be earlier than the closing time. Arrange any local guide ahead of your visit.

Choose the Danés loop or the Sueco beach hike

Danés forest loop: choose the shorter forest outing when you want time among the trees with more flexibility afterward. Ask staff which sections are open and suitable for your group.

Sueco beach trail: choose the longer walk toward Cabo Blanco beach when hiking is the main event of the day. Allow for the full return journey, uneven ground and tropical heat. The beach is a place to pause and enjoy the view; do not build your schedule around a promised swimming stop.

Confirm the current route length, surface conditions and turnaround time at the entrance. Choose for the least comfortable walker in your group. Wear closed walking shoes and bring drinking water, sun protection, insect repellent and rain protection as needed.

A simple plan from Santa Teresa

Have an early breakfast, travel to Cabuya and let the hike set the pace. Keep the afternoon flexible for a meal in Cabuya or Montezuma, depending on when you finish. We would give the longer beach trail its own outing instead of squeezing in another demanding excursion.
